Last year’s tournament was one of the weirdest I’ve ever witnessed. Everything that was supposed to happen happened. There were only five upsets in the round of 64, and I’m not sure that three of those qualify. A nine seed knocking off an eight isn’t exactly shocking. Outside of VCU knocking off Duke, we were bereft of the dramatic twists and turns that keep us glued to the TV for over the three weeks of tournament play. [click to continue...]

Last year Kevin Durant set a precedent by walking away with Player of the Year honors. This is a game that is supposed to favor experience over raw talent, but with the influx of young talent due to the NBA age-minimum I’m not so sure anymore. This year’s player of the year award will pit those two schools of thought against each other, with Tyler Hansbrough and Michael Beasley representing opposing ends. 2008 has been the year of the freshman, but has the freshman become king? No, what I despise is all the hype that has engulfed this player since he suited up for North Carolina as a freshman. If there was ever a poster boy for the ‘Great White Hype,’ this guy is it. Except this time the Wayans brothers didn’t invent a fictional character, instead, the media has created a mythical reputation for a ‘B’ level player. ‘Psycho T,’ as they like to call him, isn’t a gifted scored, he’s slow, and at 6’9, 250 lbs, he’ll get destroyed in the post at the next level. Oh, and did I mention I’m a Tar Heels supporter? [click to continue...]

Beasley had 32 points and a Big 12 Conference-record 24 rebounds in his debut at Kansas State, leading the 25th-ranked Wildcats to a 94-63 victory over Sacramento State on Friday night. Beasley broke the Big 12 record of 23 rebounds set by Kevin Durant, who starred at Texas as a freshman last season.”
