About
I’m Writing Sports is predominately written, maintained, and designed by Nick Underhill. Underhill is a 22-year-old self described sports fanatic. He was born and raised in Erie, PA, where he attends Penn State Behrend, and is pursuing a journalism degree.
Underhill has always aspired to be sports writer. While attending Iroquois High School, he began covering high school athletics for the Erie Times News. “I don’t even know how that happened. My English teacher approached me one day saying that she found an opportunity for me, and I leaped in,” Underhill explains. “From there, I knew what I wanted to do. What’s better than being able to watch sports and get paid for it?”
Throughout the years, he has pursued other ventures with Pro Fantasy Sports, as the editor of his college newspaper, and various freelance opportunities. He states that he started IWS to have something to do while recovering from a knee operation. “It caught on, so I stuck with it,” he states. “What better place to sharpen your teeth? This is the only medium where you interact with the readers on a one on one basis. With a newspaper, you don’t really know what’s working and what isn’t. If your editors like you, you’re golden, but that’s just one man’s opinion and a lot of times they are out of touch with what’s really happening.”
So why I’m Writing Sports? What’s in a name? “Oh god, don’t ask me that! I really don’t know, I kept trying name after name, and they were all taken. Then I remembered this little toy I had as a kid, and it was called Talking Sports. At the start of every card the announcers would introduce themselves, and then say ‘and we’re talking sports.’ After the fact, I thought of 100 different names, and most of them were available, but it was too late. You know what though, you can have the most clever name in the world, but it isn’t going to save you.”
What’s next for Underhill? He says that after obtaining his degree that he will pursue some ventures in more traditional media, but plans to keep the doors of IWS open for the foreseeable future. “I love this site now, its part of me. It’s a great outlet; I don’t see myself ever shutting it down. I love the fact that there’s a place for me to let a rant out about what’s going on whenever I want. Until someone let’s me take my show on the road, and they allow me to say whatever I want, when I want, IWS will be here.”
