Chelsea face an uphill battle to reach the quarter finals of the Europa League after losing the first leg of their last sixteen tie to Steaua Bucharest.
Raul Rusescu’s 34th minute penalty was enough to settle the game, and give the Romanian side a slender advantage ahead of next Thursday’s return fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Petr Cech got a hand to the spot kick, which was given for a foul by Ryan Bertrand on Rusescu, but was unable to keep it out.
The Blues will now turn their attention to Sunday’s FA Cup quarter final against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have been named as a potential destination for United striker Wayne Rooney, amid reports that the striker could leave the Premier League leaders.
The Express lists the Blues with Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain as clubs who are in a position to make a bid for the England international, who was left out of the starting line up in his sides 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.
In other news, Oscar, Ramires and David Luiz have been named in former Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad for Brazil’s friendly against Italy, which will be played at Stamford Bridge on Monday, March 25th.
The chairman of Swansea City Association Football Club, Huw Jenkins, has said that the club has planned to increase the capacity of the Liberty Stadium and they will start working on this project at the end of the ongoing season.
The Liberty Stadium currently has the capacity of accommodating 20,500 people and in most of the home matches of Swansea, the stadium gets jam packed. A lot of Swansea supporters don’t manage to buy tickets because the tickets are available only in limited numbers.
According to Jenkins, he doesn’t feel good about the fact that a lot of Swansea supporters don’t get tickets for the home games regularly and that’s why, he has decided to increase the capacity of the stadium.
Talking to the reporters in a press conference, Jenkins said, “We have planned to increase the accommodation capacity of the Liberty Stadium. The plan is to increase the number of seats to 22,000 at the end of the ongoing season and then, to add another 5,000 seats before the start of 2014-15 season.”
“We want to increase the seating capacity to 32,000 eventually. We will go step by step. It will take a couple of years, but, hopefully, we will succeed in doing what we want. The work is likely to get underway in summer.”
“It’s really disappointing that a lot of club supporters don’t get tickets to watch the home matches from the stadium. I really don’t feel good about it.”
The Liberty Stadium is not a very old stadium. It was opened only seven and half years back in July 2005. The first match played at this stadium was a friendly match between Fulham and Swansea City. That match had taken place on 23rd July, 2005 and had ended in a draw.

The Premier League match played between Aston Villa and Swansea City at Liberty Stadium on Tuesday has finished in the form of a draw. Both the teams scored two goals each and the match ended without any result. Despite playing a draw in this match, Swansea City slipped down in the points table. Now, Swansea City is at no. 9 with 29 points in 21 matches.
On the other hand, this draw didn’t have any effect on the position of Aston Villa in the points table. Villa managed to remain at no. 16 with the help of 1 point that it got from this match. Villa has 19 points in 21 matches.
Villa had suffered huge defeats in its last three matches and with Swansea City playing on its home ground; Villa was not the favourite in Tuesday’s match. Villa had conceded 15 goals in its previous three matches and the Villa defenders were under huge pressure before coming into this match.
Swansea City was off to a terrific start in the match and took the lead in the 9th minute of the match with the goal of Wayne Routledge. Pablo Hernandez gave Routledge a precise pass. But, Routledge had to get rid of Ciaran Clark which he did with ease and then, slotted the ball past the Villa goalkeeper to open the scoring for Swansea City.
Just a minute before the half time break, Aston Villa managed to level the scores with the goal of Andreas Weimann who latched on the opportunity created by Christian Benteke and rolled the ball into the left hand corner of the net to bring his team back into the match.
Villa earned a penalty just a few minutes before the end of the match and Christian Benteke made full use of that opportunity. He deceived the Swansea goalkeeper and smashed the ball into the left hand corner of the net.
But, Villa failed in maintaining that lead till the end. In the very last minute of the stoppage time, Danny Graham scored the equalizer and made sure that his team would walk away with one point.
Aston Villa’s next match will be a FA Cup encounter against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Betting on who will win the Premier League is certainly something a lot of football fans like to do, although the league has become so difficult to predict in recent seasons that many fans of football and gambling prefer to get their fix of both by playing one of the football-based games available online.
For those who can’t resist wagering on the fraught Premier League title battle though, we are reaching that stage of the season when things get serious. Although Chelsea will still feel they have a shot, realistically it would seem to be a two-horse race between the two Manchester sides now – just as it was last season. The twists and turns that we saw up until the final seconds of the final day last season also showed that betting on the eventual winner between these two is no easy matter. Continue reading →
